Spring in Lubbock is a season of transition. As we move away from the freezing temperatures of winter and prepare for the high winds and sudden thunderstorms of a West Texas summer, your roof needs a little extra attention. The extreme temperature swings in the South Plains can cause roofing materials to expand and contract, leading to small issues that can quickly turn into expensive leaks during a May downpour.

At ABF Roofing and Foam, we want to help you protect your biggest investment. Use this spring roofing maintenance checklist to ensure your home is ready for whatever the West Texas sky throws at it.

1. Clean Out the Gutters and Downspouts

Winter winds often deposit dirt, debris, and those persistent Lubbock “tumbleweed” fragments into your gutter system.

  • The Risk: Clogged gutters cause water to back up under your shingles, leading to wood rot along the eaves (fascia and soffit).

  • The Task: Clear out all debris and flush the gutters with a hose to ensure water flows freely away from your foundation.

2. Inspect for Shingle Damage

High winds are a staple of Lubbock springs. Take a walk around your yard and look up (using binoculars if necessary).

  • What to look for: Look for shingles that are cracked, curling at the edges, or completely missing.

  • The “Granule” Check: Look in your gutters for an accumulation of sand-like granules. If your shingles are losing their coating, they are no longer protected from the intense Texas UV rays.

3. Check the Flashing and Seals

Flashing is the metal material installed around “interruptions” in your roof, such as chimneys, vent pipes, and skylights. This is the most common place for leaks to start.

  • The Task: Ensure the flashing isn’t rusted or pulled away from the structure. Check the caulking or sealant around these areas to see if it has dried out or cracked during the winter freeze.

4. Trim Overhanging Branches

Tree limbs that hang too close to your roof can be a major hazard during a Lubbock windstorm.

  • The Risk: Branches can scrape against shingles, stripping away their protective surface, or break off entirely and puncture the roof deck.

  • The Task: Trim any branches that are within 6 feet of your roofline to prevent damage and keep squirrels or raccoons from gaining easy access to your attic.

5. Look for “Attic Red Flags”

Sometimes the best way to inspect your roof is from the inside. Head into your attic with a flashlight during the day.

  • What to look for: Look for light peeking through the roof boards, dark water stains on the rafters, or damp insulation. If you spot these now, you can fix a small leak before the summer monsoon season arrives.

6. Schedule a Professional Inspection

While a DIY check is a great start, many types of damage—especially “functional” hail damage—are invisible to the untrained eye. A professional roofer can spot the subtle signs of a compromised roof that a standard home inspection might miss.
